Persons who qualify for SSI cannot receive General Assistance (GA). A person cannot get GA and SSI at the same time.

An SSI applicant who has been found disabled by CAU can receive Category P3 TA if the income and asset requirements are met. An SSI applicant who has been found disabled by CAU cannot receive Category 07 TA unless the person is found "not blind" or "not disabled" by the Administrative Law Judge and has:

  • filed for a review by the Appeals Council, or
  • filed a civil action in U.S. District Court.

As a condition of eligibility for GA, a client with a pending SSI application must sign an agreement with DHS authorizing repayment of any GA received while their SSI application or appeal was pending.

When a GA client begins receiving SSI, remove the person or cancel the GA case. To meet their medical needs, open an AABD Medical or Family Health case effective for the same month as the GA deletion. Do not make the client file an application or reapply through intake.

If the client was in a Family and Children Assistance case, review the family's eligibility for TANF.
