Transition Training for Parents of Students with Disabilities

What is NEXT STEPS?

NEXT STEPS teams provide training to parents and youth with disabilities for life after high school.

NEXT?STEPS Mission

Illinois NEXT STEPS Mission Statement is to Improve the delivery of services to children with disabilities and their families; develop and/or support productive relationships between families and persons working with their children; increase family awareness of disability options and resources; and link families experienced with disability issues to families seeking assistance.

NEXT?STEPS is a Parent Training and Resource Network focused on the topic of Planning for a Student's Successful Transition from High School to Adult Life.

NEXT STEPS:

The Transition Series is an eight workshop curriculum designed to help families prepare for transition from high school to adult life:

  1. Transition: Making it in the Real World
  2. Transition Plans: Roadmaps to the Future
  3. Self Advocacy and Supports: Keys to Independence
  4. Moving On: Life in the Community
  5. Getting Ready: Preparing for Work While in School
  6. Planning Ahead: Future Finances and Supports
  7. Adult Life: Effective partnerships
  8. Adult Life: Accessing Services

NEXT STEPS team throughout Illinois present these eight areas of transition planning during the school year. For available trainings and their location, visit www.nextstepsillinois.org and click on available trainings and their location. You can search by zip code or county.

NEXT STEPS team members include representatives from special education, vocational rehabilitation, parents or family member, a youth with a disability or anyone with a passion for transition services.

NEXT STEPS teams attend formalized training and yearly in-services.
