What is the purpose of this service?
The Mentoring Children of Prisoners (MCOP) program seeks to foster constructive, long-term, one-on-one relationships between mentors 18 years or older and school-age children (ages 4 - 17) with a parent in prison. The mentor serves as a supportive role model that encourages positive self-regard and responsibility. The relationships will promote positive childhood/adolescent development that reduces the likelihood of engagement in risk-taking behavior and thereby reduces the potential for involvement in the criminal justice system.
Who can receive these services?
Youth, age 4 to 17, living in the Humboldt Park or Roseland community areas of Chicago and having a parent in state or federal prison are eligible to become a mentee (youth receiving services).
- Humboldt Park Community Boundaries: Armitage Avenue to the north, Chicago Avenue to the south, Western Avenue to the east, and Pulaski Road to the west.
- Roseland Community Boundaries: 85th Street to the north, 115th Street to the south, Cottage Grove Avenue to the east, and Halsted Street to the west.
